A new report says Japan is ranked 96th in global English ability. The EF English Proficiency Index studied adults in 123 countries. It found a big gap between “understanding English” and “using English.” Many people can read and listen, but speaking and writing remain major challenges. The study also introduced a new AI system to check speaking and writing skills.
The report says the English gap inside Japan is becoming bigger. People in large cities scored higher than people in rural areas, with more than a 40-point difference. Young adults had the lowest scores, even though they use digital tools every day. Researchers say many young people understand English through subtitles, but do not use it actively.
Around the world, many countries also struggle with speaking skills. The report warns that English ability is connected to job skills, education, and economic growth. The study says Japan needs to improve real-world English use to keep up in the AI era.
