簡単英語ニュース – Scientists Track Space Junk With Earthquake Sensors
科学者が地震計を用いて地球に落下する宇宙ゴミを追跡する方法を考案
Scientists have found a new way to track space debris falling to Earth. They use networks of seismometers, the same instruments that detect earthquakes. This method provides detailed information about where debris enters the atmosphere and where it might land.
The research team tracked a large piece of a Chinese spacecraft called Shenzhou-15 in April 2024. This object was over 1.5 tons and could have been a potential threat. As debris falls, it moves faster than sound, creating sonic booms. These shock waves make the ground vibrate, and seismometers can detect these rumblings.
By mapping which seismometers were activated, the scientists could reconstruct the object's trajectory and speed. They used data from 127 sensors in southern California. The debris was moving at Mach 25-30, about ten times faster than the world's fastest jet.
This new tracking happens in near real-time. This speed is important for rapid retrieval of objects that reach the ground, especially if they contain harmful substances or radioactive material. The method complements existing radar tracking, which can sometimes be inaccurate.
"Re-entries are happening more frequently," said lead scientist Benjamin Fernando. He explained that this is a growing problem and better tracking tools are needed. The new methodology helps make the process of locating fallen debris much faster and more precise.
