A new study suggests that people are more likely to help others when they are in a poor environment. Researchers from the University of Birmingham tested over 500 adults on their willingness to help in different contexts.
In the experiment, participants watched a movie. Sometimes, they were prompted to stop and perform an effortful task, like squeezing a hand grip or clicking boxes. This would give monetary credits to an anonymous stranger. Some participants were placed in a "rich" environment with many good opportunities for rewards. Others were in a "poor" environment with mostly bad or unlikely rewards.
Surprisingly, people in the poor environment were more likely to help. "When people were in a poor environment they were surprisingly more likely to help compared to the richer environment," said lead researcher Dr. Todd Vogel. He explained that the opportunities we encounter in daily life can impact our decisions.
The study suggests that being overwhelmed with too many good choices may actually make people more discerning about when to help. Researchers believe this has real world implications for how communities form and maintain social bonds. The findings were published in Nature Communications.
