髙市早苗首相率いる自民党が衆院選で歴史的勝利、改憲への動き加速へ
Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae has led her ruling Liberal Democratic Party to a historic victory in a snap election. The LDP won a two-thirds majority in the Lower House of Japan's parliament.
The result is a landslide victory for the LDP and a major loss for the main opposition party. Opposition leaders have said they intend to step down. At a news conference, Takaichi said the victory gives her a strong mandate to accelerate her policy plans.
"The people have given us strong encouragement," Takaichi said. "As a united party, we will grit our teeth and fulfill the promises we have made." She also stated her determination to move forward with efforts to amend the Constitution.
Any proposal to change the Constitution needs approval from two-thirds of both chambers of the Diet before going to a national referendum. The ruling coalition does not yet have that level of support in the Upper House. The Constitution has never been amended since it took effect in 1947.
Takaichi also mentioned discussing a possible two-year exemption for food from the consumption tax. She wants an interim report on this issue before summer, through discussions at a cross-party council.
