Scientists from Chung-Ang University in South Korea have developed a new way to generate electricity. Their device is inspired by the design of a Tesla turbine and uses compressed air to create power without the risk of sparks or electrostatic discharge.
The device works by using the viscous force of high-pressure air to create a rotational motion inside a small structure. Inside, special layers acquire a surface charge from tiny particulate matter in the air itself. This is a new phenomenon the team calls the "particulate static effect." This method does not require frictional sliding, so it operates without physical contact between parts.
The innovation is the first to use this effect with a Tesla turbine structure. In tests, the generator produced a high output of up to 800 volts and 2.5 amps. It achieved a very high rotational speed of over 8,400 revolutions per minute.
The research has significant potential for real-world use. It could be applied in industrial environments where large amounts of compressed or wasted airflow are common. The device's high-voltage output could power small electronics. It could also help regulate humidity and remove airborne dust by generating negative ions. The team also showed it could collect water from moisture in the air.
"From these results, we observed the particulate static effect," said lead researcher Dr. Sangmin Lee. He explained that their frictionless design allows for high-frequency electrical outputs. The study, published in Advanced Energy Materials, could inspire further interdisciplinary research into new energy harvesting methods.
